What is Wakesurfing?

Wakesurfing (similar to, but not the same sport as, wakeboarding) is a water sport in which a surfer trails behind a wakeboard boat, surfing the boat’s wake without being directly pulled by the boat.[1] The wake from the boat mimics the look and feel of an actual ocean wave. After getting up on the wave by use of a tow rope, wakesurfers drop the rope, and ride the steep face below the wave’s peak in a fashion reminiscent of ocean surfing. Wakesurfers generally use special boards, usually five feet or shorter. An ocean wave that provides a ride of 5 seconds to 30 seconds, because the wave ends. Wakesurfers can ride boat wakes for much longer times, because the wave is virtually perpetual.

Wake Surfing Dog with SUP?

What’SUP

I know what you’re about to say: “Oh man, this is lame. Stand-up paddleboarding is so whack.” Trust me, I’ve heard it all before and even said it myself; that was until I tried it. Now I’ve suddenly found myself screening the shipping department’s phone calls as they try to collect the board from this very photo shoot. It has quickly become one of my favorite pieces of equipment on the dock. Imagine wakesurfing 10 feet farther back, bringing your dog or girlfriend along with you, wakesurfing doubles (regular board in front, SUP in back) and never having to actually get wet on those cold winter days. This is the world of SUP surfing behind the boat. The ride is endless, and the best part about it is it can be done on almost any inboard boat. You don’t need a 4-foot barrel or gastric bypass to keep with the wave, just the board and a wake of some sort. Hell, you could probably do it behind a PWC if you really wanted to. The board will catch any roller in site and ride for days.

To get started, stand up on your board and have someone toss you the surf rope. When you are feeling the push, you can trade the rope for the paddle and you’re off and SUPing.

If you’re one of those “beyond cool” types, you can just go ahead and snap the paddle over your knee and ride it like a longboard cruiser, or use the paddle to help you drop farther back than ever before, then paddle down the line all the way back to the sweet spot for an epic floater. When you finally tire of being crop-dusted by the boat driver who had one too many chalupas for lunch, simply peel off the wake and sneak your way into the 5:15 p.m. sunset paddle tour with all the hottest moms in the neighborhood. Trust me, you want this.

That’s what’SUP.
